This tropical perennial may be grown as a greenhouse or houseplant, or as an outdoor perennial A charmingly attractive oddity. This plant, a Gensneriad, develops from a rhizomatous and spreading root structure. The foliage of this Gesneriad is attractively colored in purple, red and green. The flowers are held in red-orange calyces (cupped bracts). After flowering, the seed fruits are a stunning glossy purple-green and are incredibly stunning .
This plant does well in warm to intermediate temps and prefers either humid greenhouse or terrarium culture. Be sure to use a free-draining peaty type potting mix. It seems to prefer warmth and does best if kept above 60F.
