Begonia xanthina "Dark Shadows"

NOTE: This is an unregistered named selection chosen as best from among a batch of f2 seed-grown plants; It is from a handful I selected as "keepers", all of which sport the very best color patterns/markings.

A well grown Begonia xanthina is a stunning plant. However, It is also a variable species whose medium-large foliage can range from green, to green or reddish-green with lighter spots, and even an all-purple-ish leaf form (var. lazuli ?). The mature foliage is always heavy veined and textured. The rhizomatous species bears showy, late season, yellow flowers on medium-tall stems.

This species appears rather cold tolerant as long as not overwatered - it does well for me through our typically long winters in the greenhouse, which drops to 52- 55F nearly every night. Despite its tolerance, they seem to "grow" most vigorously for me when it gets warm and humid.

These are young plants, currently in 2 1/2" pots.
