Mountain Orchids

Begonia taliensis (seedling)

Begonia taliensis is near impossbile to find for sale. It is a compact woodland species from western Yunnan province mountains of China. It is said to grow from 4000-7000' elevation and thus, with careful siting, it should be fairly hardy for zones 7 or 8 or so. For everyone else, like myself, we can grow it as a beautiful and elegant container plant.

The strain of this plant (Originally from the Sichuan, Kang Ding of China) bears variably but dramatically patterned foliage - green with marbling of dark green-black and silver! The silver patches are iridescent and vary from invisible to visible - depending upon angle of light! Very cool.

NOTE: This is a species which is tuberous, they will expect a cool dormant rest (dormant = leafless) as winter approaches - and will probably want to not be too wet in the winter months. As I do for B. henryi, I refridgerate my dried-off tubers when they go dormant.
