Mountain Orchids

Begonia ignita

Begonia ignita is another stunning newcomer to emerge into the horticultural scene. It's provenance is a bit mysterious as it was formally described & published as a species based solely on plants that had entered cultivation via Sulawesi, Indonesia - but without known habitat or collection/locality data.

As can be seen from the photos, it produces a broad low mound of beautifully attractive foliage.  This plant is a perfectly color-coordinated combination of lime green markings over glossy chocolate-green leaves that, when blooming, is perfectly complemented by the bright orange flowers.

Culturally, It seems that this species responds well to high humidity that so suits others of its ilk - so is likely best grown under-glass (terrarium). That being said, so far it appears to be a reliable and trouble-free grower and is fairly quick to propagate.

Offered here as husky plants in 2 1/2" pots.
