Mountain Orchids

Begonia flaviflora

Begonia flaviflora is a fascinating rhizomatous species from the Eastern Himalaya regions of Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Myanmar and on into western China at around 1500 - 2500m elev. It bears medium-large somewhat thin textured leaves with a subtle patterning that is especially evident on fresh young foliage. Older foliage is more green. Equally fascinating are the rhizomes which are red-orange tinted and covered with a golden stubble, though I suppose if one has a good layer of leaf-litter (such as if grown outside) that might not be noticeable.   It is claimed to be cold hard to around 10F, but I have no means to test that here.

Flowers are a sizable and bright yellow and are on proudly displayed on well-held stems - rather similar to Begonia xanthina.

These plants are currently in 2 1/2" - 3" pots.
