This East Asian / Chinese / Himalayan perennial species is said to hail from "shady moist places by streams, on rocks of valley, under dense forests of shady stony cliffs, under evergreen broad-leaved forests, on moist rocks, in shrubberies by streams" and from elevations up to 3200M. (pfaf.org)
Does best with reliable humidity, but too wet and it can "melt".
These were propagated from a dark-leaf plant originally obtained from Wanda Macnair - Buxton Branch / ABS, currently in 2 1/2" pots.
