Begonia ningmingensis var. bella

Begonia ningmingensis is a stunning Chinese limestone region species. The species has a fair degree of variation in both size and coloration. All are showy, but some are more dramatic than others.  In Begonia ningmingensis var. bella,  the foliage is nearly round in outline and is comparatively smaller overall in all its parts.

As it is fairly new to cultivation, my growing experience with it is somewhat limited. It has, however, so far responded exceedingly well to careful terrarium-type culture.  Like so many of similar cliff/crevice dwelling species, great care should be exercised to not overwater.  Additionally, I prefer to incorporate a percentage of limestone chippings into the growing mix.

The foliage of "var. bella" is generally a deep black-green with a heavy silver band centered along the veining. New growth exhibits a strong reddish tinge which compliments the base color.

Offered here as husky young plants in 2 1/2" pots.
